About

"Rudiger von Arnim, originally from Frankfurt, Germany, received the doctoral degree in Economics from the New School for Social Research in New York, NY, in 2008. He is Assistant Professor at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. His research focuses on international macroeconomics, trade and development, particularly the application of computer simulated models for policy analysis. Von Arnim's dissertation presents an investigation of such models of income, production and trade. The Neoclassical model, by emphasizing optimal substitution responses to flexible price changes, is firmly rooted in the belief that market solutions are always superior to 'policy' - whereas alternatives based on Keynesian, Kaleckian and Kaldorian theory suggest the importance of changes of income, its distribution, and employment and trade, as well as possibilities for policy to mitigate adverse affects of macroeconomic shocks. As short- to medium-term economic outcomes in the real world always feature such quantity changes, the latter class of models is highly relevant to policy makers, particularly in developing countries."
