About
Dan served in the US Army for several years. He has served in several operations spanning most of the globe; including Latin America, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. With such units as the 1-508th PIR (Panama), 194th Armor BDE, 505th PIR, Division Staff of the 82nd Airborne, various Special Operations units, as well as several NATO (IFOR, SFOR, KFOR), and Joint Task Forces; throughout the tenure of his career. A forthcoming memoir "A View from the Wall" is due to press late summer 2012.
His research focus is mainly Ancient Greek History, with focus in Military Studies in the ancient world. His proposed graduate research will investigate the use and impact of "professional" soldiers (mercenaries) by the successors of Alexander and throughout the Hellenistic Period down to the fall of Ptolemaic Egypt in 31 BC. He has conducted significant research on the Punic Wars (Between Rome and Carthage) as well as the armies of Achaemenid Persia. Conflicts which might be labeled as 'insurgency' in the ancient world are also of particular interest.
He continues to research and analyze conflicts which are considered 'Unconventional Warfare' with special interest in WWII and post WWII (OSS, SOE, National Resistance movements ELAS, EDES, Tito's Partisans, during WWII Balkan occupation by Germany and Italy), Cold War, Clandestine Operations, as well as the practical application of military tactics and strategy. This includes modern 'Special Operations Forces', their respective capabilities and history.
He remains actively involved in several societies and associations of the ancient world, history, and sociology in recent years. Currently he serves as the Secretary for the Society of Ancient Military Historians.
He has spent time at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and has been accepted to pursue his graduate work in Ancient Warfare at the University College Dublin, School of Classics.
