About
Biosketch for Alf Seegert
While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy at the University of Utah, Alf worked at Hansen Planetarium as a guide, instructor, and star-theater lecturer before leaving the state to play lead guitar for a progressive rock band. After deciding that this was not the life for him, he returned to school and completed a master’s degree in Philosophy (focus on Environmental Philosophy). He then worked for several years in the non-profit environmental field as an ecological restoration coordinator for TreeUtah. He ultimately decided to further his education by completing an M.A. and PhD in English (British and American Literature), with a focus on the intersections between nature and virtuality in narrative. He currently works as Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in the Department of English at the University of Utah, where he enjoys teaching courses in nature and virtuality, critical theory, an online introduction to literature, and Intellectual Traditions courses for the Honors College. In his spare time, Alf designs Euro-style strategy games (internationally published and distributed) which are themed on trolls and The Canterbury Tales.
Alf Seegert's research on "cybercultural ecologies" examines the interpenetrating relationships between nature, virtuality, and narrative as represented in literature, film, and new media. His essays have been featured in Western Humanities Review, The Journal of Ecocriticism, The Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds, and the anthologies Philip K. Dick and Philosophy and C.S. Lewis and the Imaginative World.
